Help Make a Difference: Foster Older Children and Sibling Groups

At Loftus-Vergari & Associates, we are dedicated to ensuring every child in the foster care system receives the love, stability, and support they deserve. However, older children and sibling groups often face longer wait times for placement and are typically underserved. We are actively seeking compassionate and committed individuals or families who are willing to open their hearts and homes to these children.

Why Foster Older Children and Sibling Groups?

  • Keep Siblings Together: Siblings who are placed together can maintain crucial emotional bonds and support each other through the challenges of foster care.
  • Provide Stability for Older Children: Older children in foster care need guidance and support as they transition into adulthood. Your mentorship can make a significant difference in their lives.
  • Fulfill a Critical Need: There is a pressing need for foster homes that can accommodate these groups, ensuring they are not separated or placed in temporary shelters.

How You Can Help

  • Become a Foster Parent: By fostering older children or sibling groups, you play a pivotal role in providing a nurturing and stable environment.
  • Spread Awareness: Advocate within your community to raise awareness about the needs of older children and sibling groups in foster care.
  • Support Our Mission: Even if fostering isn’t an option for you, consider volunteering, donating, or supporting our programs in other ways.

Your dedication can change the trajectory of a child’s life, providing them with the security and care they need to thrive. To learn more about fostering older children and sibling groups, please contact us.

How long does the approval process take?

Kinship family applicants should complete the application and approval process within 60 days. A staff member from the adoption unit works with kinship families to ensure the timeline is met.

Traditional foster family applicants do not have a timeframe to complete the application and approval process, however, the average time of approval is approximately 90 days. Geneva Mathuse, Recruiter, works with traditional foster families to ensure they move smoothly through the approval process.

How do I get the training hours?

Training is provided to all families during the approval process. Ongoing trainings are provided by LVA caseworkers and offered online thereafter so that families continue to receive 12 hours of training annually.

Are there children legally free and available for adoption when they enter foster care?

Most often children are not able to be adopted when they enter into foster care, as the child’s parents have parental rights. If a child in foster care does become eligible for adoption, the family the child is placed with is most often given the option to adopt the child.

“I’m nervous that I will get attached to the kids if I do foster care.”

This is a common fear and often families do become attached to children they care for. Many children continue to have contact with foster families after they have returned home to their parents.

What if there is an emergency after hours?

LVA has an on-call system for families to utliize in the event there is a situation or emergency after typical business hours. LVA has an assigned caseworker and supervisor on-call every day to assist with situations after hours.

What is Formal and Informal Kinship Care?

Formal: When a child enters foster care and is placed with a relative or family friend, those who want to be formal kinship must go through the application and approval process to become a licensed foster home and receive a monthly stipend to care for the child.

Informal: When a child enters foster care and is placed with a relative of family friend, those who would like informal kinship do so without the legal involvement of family court and without financial assistance from the child welfare system.

Is there a need for foster homes for a certain age range of kids?

Yes! LVA will consider a family’s preference of age, but the greatest need is for children 12 and older.

Will I have to interact with birth parents?

Yes. Birth parents have the right to know where their child is placed when they are in foster care and have the right to weekly visitation with their child. Foster parents are responsible for taking children to and from a visitation site and are encouraged to communicate with birth parents, so they have updated information on the care of their child.

Will someone from LVA attend court hearings with me?

Yes. Your assigned LVA caseworker will attend all court hearings with you.

Is there a support group for foster parents?

Yes. LVA offers monthly support groups to all kinship and foster parents.
